Edge Out Your Competition with Mobile Apps
Posted on March 21, 2012 |
Online businesses nowadays are a dime a dozen. For example, when you search Google for “flower shop”, literally thousands of online stores pop up in the search results. You’d be extremely lucky if your business even appears in the first few pages of a search. Don’t get me wrong, websites are still great promotional tools but they’re just not quite as effective anymore.
Considering the record-breaking sales of smartphones and tablets, it might be time for you to get into mobile and stay ahead of the pack. According to online market analysts, the number of available mobile retail applications has increased 350% from 2009 to 2010 and retail purchases using mobile apps jumped 91% from the same period.
Don’t think that apps are just for games and entertainment. Nowadays, you can have an app that caters to your specific line of business, be it a retail store, a specialty shop, fast food delivery, or anything else. Read more
Rethinking Leadership
Posted on March 14, 2012 |
Thanks largely to the growth of the Internet and social media, people are more empowered and worthy ideas now flow from the bottom up as often as from the top down. Leaders are certainly not obsolete but their role and status needs to be re-examined. It is common for leaders to be cited – in the press and in public – for their exceptional talent and praised for their notable accomplishments. In reality, it is usually the contribution of followers that determines success or failure. Because of misplaced accolades, leaders are unrealistically expected to deliver wealth, health and happiness to their troops and they inevitably fall short. Disappointing results leads to frequent top management firings and hirings with little, if anything, to show for them. For example, research done by Rene Olie of Erasmus University in Rotterdam analyzed the performance of 45 Dutch companies. The study found that changing CEOs had little impact on the company’s prospects whereas changes in lower-ranking executives added significant value. Similarly, when Boris Groysberg, an economist, tracked the performance of leaders on Wall Street he found that when lionized leaders left for a new job, their performance at their next assignment was subpar. The reason for this unexpected result, he concluded, was that it was the actions of employees at lower levels that were critical to the company’s initial success. In fact, conditions beyond anyone’s control – weather gyrations, geopolitical events, being at the right place at the right time – are frequently the difference between a leader who thrives and one that bombs. Given this revised perspective, it is hard to justify the sky high compensation given to many leaders. Moreover, the growing gap between the rich and poor has the potential, if not the certainty, of ripping society apart somewhere down the road. Read more
10 Tips to Avoid Blogging Burnout
Posted on April 11, 2010 |
Burnout is something that all writers experience from time to time. This is true no matter how much you adore writing and blogging. It can come about due to having a schedule you want to adhere to, or a deadline you are definite about meeting. Whatever the reason is, you may have just set yourself up to develop a serious case of blogger’s burnout.
This can be a very limiting “disorder” because you will suddenly not have any idea what to write. Though this can be very disheartening for the normally enthusiastic blogger, there is hope to move past it and be happily blogging away again. Have a look at these tips to keep your brain feeling fresh and alert: Read more
