Google AdWords Keyword Match Types

Using Google AdWords can help you identify new keyword strategies and monitor phrases you’re currently targeting for your site. I’ve spent a lot of time mired in AdWords queries – wondering if I’m making the right choice, puzzling over the results, hoping it all works out for the best.

Here, I’ll go over some specific ways to look at, understand and interpret three of the five most common keyword match types used by Google: exact, broad, phrase, negative and embedded.

These match types are categories of data that show what type of searches might display your ad corresponding to your chosen keywords:

  • Broad match – this is the default match type in AdWords. This means your ad will be triggered by all searches relevant to your chosen keywords, even for words you might not have specifically targeted. Broad match is a broad brush stroke.
  • Phrase match focuses your ads to appear only when a specific phrase is used in the order you specified.
  • Exact match becomes even more narrow by displaying your ad when your exact phrase is used in the search without any variations or words between, after or before. This is the more surgical option – the small, fine brush.
  • Negative match is a specialized option that eliminates specific phrases on which you do not want your ads to appear.
  • Embedded match is another specialty tool that lets you choose certain phrase or exact matches from triggering your ads. Read more
